Gorilla Glue - FAQ's

Gorilla Glue - FAQ's Back

Q) What is the temperature range for applying the glue?

A) For best results, apply the glue at room temperature.

Q) Can you speed up the curing process?

A) Original Gorilla Glue should be gripped for 1–2 hours. During this time, it reaches 80% cure. Allow 24 hours for 100% cure. Note that cure time can vary depending on temperature, humidity and the porosity of the bonding materials.

Q) How do I extend the shelf life of Gorilla Glue?

A) Gorilla Glue is moisture activated. Once the adhesive comes in contact with moisture, it can start to harden. To extend the shelf life, always wipe lid and nozzle clean with a dry cloth and tightly replace the lid.

Q) My bottle of glue has formed a dry layer on top; can I still use it?

A) Any glue that is still in liquid form is perfectly usable and reliable. If the dry layer is very thin, use a pointed tool to poke through it and carefully pull the dry layer through the cap. Do not microwave or heat your bottle of Gorilla Glue to soften the top layer.

Q) How do I clean up Gorilla Glue?

A) Wipe off excess glue immediately with a dry cloth or standard paint thinner. Do not drag glue over material; instead, make small swipes to remove wet adhesive. Make sure you avoid skin contact. Cured glue can be removed with a chisel, scraper or sandpaper.

Q) What is the proper grip time?

A) When using Original Gorilla Glue, grip objects for 1–2 hours. For best results, leave overnight.

Q) Why do I need to grip?

A) Gorilla Glue expands as it cures. To ensure the strongest bond, gripping pressure is needed. There are many different ways to grip the surfaces, but keep in mind that the stronger the pressure, the better the bond will be. Professional clamps are ideal, but if those aren’t handy, you can use heavy weight from bricks, books or even Gorilla Tape. The key is to ensure a tight-fitting glue line by applying even distribution of pressure.

Q) Why do I need to add moisture before gluing with Gorilla Glue?

A) Gorilla Glue is moisture activated—this is what causes the chemical reaction in polyurethane adhesives. Therefore, you need to apply a small amount of moisture to one surface. Then apply glue to the dry surface and grip. For dense hardwoods, lightly dampen both surfaces prior to gluing.

Q) Is Gorilla Glue truly 100% waterproof?

Yes. Gorilla Glue is 100% waterproof. It passes ANSI/HPVA Types I and II.

Q) How much Gorilla Glue should I apply?

A) Apply a thin layer of glue - a little bit goes a long way. As a general guide, use a ½ ounce per square foot. Be careful of uncured “squeeze-out” or wet glue, particularly on finished furniture. If you need to remove any squeeze-out, we recommend wiping with a dry cloth or using a standard paint thinner. Make sure you use the solvent with care in a well-ventilated area. Always wear gloves. Once the glue is dry, it is best removed mechanically: Try sanding, chiseling, scraping or picking. The dried glue will not damage tools.

Visit our Gorilla Glue Directions page for more information.

Q) Is Gorilla Glue really for the Toughest Jobs on Planet Earth?

A) Gorilla Glue is an all-purpose adhesive. If used correctly, it will bond just about anything and for just about forever. It is free of solvents and fillers, which makes it strong and versatile. There are some surfaces and materials that are difficult to glue, such as certain plastics. Aside from a few of these materials, we are certain Gorilla Glue offers an extraordinary, waterproof bond on just about anything.

Original Gorilla Glue should be left out of reach of children and animals.
