Helical spring lock washers, or spring washers as they are more commonly known, are a ring split at one end and bent into a helical shape. During fastening, the spring washer is compressed, and the tension of the spring washer will maintain pressure against the bolt head/nut & the material being fastened to. In theory this prevents the bolted joint from coming lose. In practice however, spring washers have been proven to be ineffective and we would only recommend using with fasteners with a tensile class of 5.8 & less (mild steel), and in applications using a slow fastening torque. Spring washers are not to be used in conjunction with a flat washer as this reduces their effectiveness even further. For high tensile & high torque applications, we recommend using Nord-Lock washers.
